The Impact of Esports on Education

K–12 Education

Esports is emerging as a powerful tool in K–12 education, offering numerous benefits that extend beyond traditional classroom learning. Research indicates that participation in esports can enhance student engagement, support social-emotional learning, and introduce career pathways in STEM, media production, and game development (Rothwell & Shaffer, 2019).
Esports programs in schools foster essential 21st-century skills such as teamwork, strategic thinking, and digital literacy—skills that are critical for students’ future success (Rothwell & Shaffer, 2019).

Rothwell and Shaffer’s research also shows that competitive esports teams help meet the growing demand to train students in skills emphasized in STEM and Career Technical Education (CTE) programs. These programs further support soft skill development, including communication, collaboration, and problem-solving—traits highly valued by universities and employers.

Higher Education

In higher education, esports has been shown to positively influence student habits, health, and wellness. A mixed-methods study by Delello et al. (2025) found that esports participation can improve academic performance, strengthen social connections, and enhance overall well-being.
The structured nature of collegiate esports programs helps students sharpen skills relevant to coursework, achieve higher grades, and maintain academic focus (Delello et al., 2025).

Additionally, esports programs in colleges and universities can generate revenue, promote inclusion, and provide valuable opportunities for career development in STEM fields (Archibald, 2024). Archibald’s review also highlights the benefits of scholarships, workforce readiness, and strategic marketing in supporting esports programs.

Professional Work

Esports also creates viable career pathways in the professional world. The International Journal of Esports (2025) highlights the neurocognitive abilities, stress responses, and fitness levels of competitive gamers, showing transferable skills beneficial across industries such as STEM, media, and game development.
A study published in Frontiers in Psychology (2020) found that motivations like competition, skill-building, and social connection predict career planning in professional esports. This underscores esports’ potential as a career-launching platform, supporting both personal development and long-term advancement.

More About This CEU

Today’s demands on learning outcomes are very different from the demands of 25, or even 10 years ago. The measurements and definitions of student success are shifting. Students value cooperation and consensus-building more than they did in the past. Innovative technologies offer new ways to learn. Knowing that active learning experiences can enhance student creativity, motivation, engagement and overall success, educators are thinking beyond static rows of chairs to serve the needs of all learners. However, environments designed for traditional, passive and outmoded teaching methods can hinder the adoption of active learning.

Inspired by ongoing research and insights, Steelcase Education researchers have devised a holistic approach that recognizes the interdependencies of pedagogy, technology and space. In this course, you will discover compelling research that demonstrates the benefits of active learning classrooms. You will also learn how to apply key design principles to create intentional spaces that can engage and inspire users, place control of learning and teaching in their hands, and provide tangible, successful results.
